SERVICES

We provide professional editing, proofreading, indexing, translation, and writing services for nonfiction, academic, legal, scholarly, and trade publications. We also perform taxonomy and vocabulary control services.

Copyediting

Copyediting involves the mechanical editing of a manuscript, applying the styles that you, the client, stipulate.

Copyediting, in general, is divided into three simple categories: light, medium, and heavy. We provide service in all three categories.

We provide copyediting services for scholarly and trade books, journal articles, reports, business publications, resumes, websites, and other materials. We aim to polish your writing so it is clean, clear, and error-free. We work on the mechanics of the language you have used in your writing, including

  • Syntax
  • Citations
  • Grammar
  • References
  • Spelling
  • Bibliography
  • Punctuation

In English, we are well-versed in the Chicago Manual of Style and the Associated Press stylebooks, as well as with the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online dictionary. We are also very familiar with widely accepted grammatical norms and standards for Portuguese and Spanish languages.

We enforce your house style as required, and should you not have one, we will work to create one for you. We work in a variety of subject matter, including government, information systems, law and law enforcement, linguistics, medicine, pharmaceuticals, psychology, social sciences, and others.

In our work, we concern ourselves with the mechanics of language and the tone and voice, ensuring you are saying what you mean to say.
In no way do we alter your voice. We may, however, suggest changes that will ensure that your voice is clear. Using the Track Changes feature, we generally work in Microsoft Word, placing queries throughout where unauthorized outright changes would be inappropriate.

Indexing

The human brain is a pattern-recognition machine. However, dense and extensive information can confuse the brain, causing it to miss important information.

Your book is like a forest. Don’t let your reader get lost in it and miss its patterns.

A good index can serve as a map for your reader, making your book more accessible and valuable. It can help readers access key ideas through multiple access points.

People often look at the index in their decision to buy a book. Let us help your readers see the patterns you intend them to see by having a good index.

Translation

Translation is a science, but it’s not mathematics. There isn’t always an exact equivalency of words or terms between two different languages.

Writer Anthony Burgess said translation is not a matter of words only; it is a matter of making intelligible a whole culture. Thus, literal translations are rarely, if ever, appropriate. Rather, translated information should sound as if it originated in the target language and not as if someone used Google Translate.

Translation is not just a science; it’s an art.
We can help you make your message sound as artful in Portuguese or Spanish as it is in English—and vice versa.
